Growing an SMS list without buying low-intent signups

01

Why were more popup views not helping?

The signup unit promised a broad discount but gave shoppers no reason to expect useful texts afterward. Mobile traffic saw it too early, returning subscribers saw it repeatedly, and the disclosure was visually detached from the call to action. Raw starts increased, but confirmation and welcome-flow engagement did not.

02

What did SMSLeads test?

We changed the value exchange from a generic coupon to feeding reminders, restock alerts, and first access to product drops. Placement moved later for first-time visitors and earlier for shoppers arriving from high-intent product pages. The disclosure named the brand, expected cadence, and opt-out method beside the primary action.

03

What happened over six weeks?

Completed opt-ins rose from 3.9% to 6.5% of eligible mobile sessions, a 67% lift. Welcome-flow click-through increased to 12.4%, while welcome opt-outs fell from 0.72% to 0.39%. The larger list also behaved like a better list because expectations were clear before consent.
